East Coast Style

I got my latest issue of House Beautiful Monday and I have been enjoying it this week.  I was really inspired by the cottage in Maine designed by Tom Scheerer.  Here are the pictures from House Beautiful in case you missed it.

Outside shot of the summer home on Somes Sound in Maine.

I really feel drawn to this room!  It is an interesting mix to say the least.  From the Victorian sofa, to the Saarinen coffee table, to the wicker chairs, to the chintz curtains, to the ornate Empire mirror, it looks like a mish mash of furnishings collected over time.  But, I'm sure there was a plan behind the combination.  It wasn't just thrown together haphazardly!

The dining room, with a mix of formal scenic wallpaper and informal bentwood chairs and sea grass rug.

I keep opening my magazine to this picture to study it.  I love the tufted sofa and the vintage rattan coffee table.  The circle on the table is actually a vintage basketball hoop.  I also love the lamps and of course the chintz curtains.

The staircase, with its fun collection of bird prints.  The runner brings so much interest to the stairs.

The master bedroom is a mix of patterns and colors, but still feels very soothing!

Not a typical boy's bedroom!  The wallpaper is the very trendy Spatter by Hinson.  I love how it is mixed with an old quilt and a bed inherited from grandma!

More great wallpaper in this bedroom!

I would love to spend the summer in this bedroom!  Tom Scheerer says that the fabric used in this room is very granny, but he updated it with an unusual headboard that spans behind two twin beds.  The striped bed spreads also give it an edge.

The kitchen banquette.

The porch filled with wicker furniture, a necessity for a summer house!

While looking at the pictures of this house, I kept thinking it reminded me of another designer whose work I really admire, Jeffrey Bilhuber.  It turns out that Tom and Jeffrey had a design partnership from 1985 to 1995     Their styles are very similar.  Here are some rooms designed by Jeffrey Bilhuber.

Look at those lime chairs and colorful abstract painting!  Looks gorgeous with the dark walls.

Love the mix of pale blues and corals in this room.  I also like the rug layered on top of the sea grass rug.

I like the wallpaper and the artwork highlighted by picture lights.  I like to use picture lights to accent my artwork also.  I bought mine at Home Depot years ago.  They add nice ambient lighting.

The above images were found here.

The pictures below are of Jeffrey Bilhuber's own New York home featured in House Beautiful.

As much as I like a streamlined modern room, I love this almost cluttered style.  It has a real preppy, country club, Nantucket vibe to it.  It is a style that develops over time and lends itself to families with young children. You can put a newspaper down on the coffee table and it won't ruin the look of the whole room like with some styles.  It is very comfortable.

You don't have to live on the East coast to bring the style to your home!  This style is characterized by:

Traditional furnishings mixed with rattan and wicker and even some modern.  Looks like it was collected over time, or passed down from your grandparents.

Bright happy colors on the walls and furnishings!  Think pale blue, coral, pink, and lime.

Mix of patterns.  Chintz, ticking, florals, "granny."  Using these patterns in unusual ways makes them almost modern.  Granny patterns that are so out of style and unexpected that it makes them seem edgy.

Anything goes artwork.  From elaborate mirrors, to abstract paintings, to portraits, they all work together!

Quirky accessories!

I have always loved this style and seeing the cottage that Tom Scheerer designed just reinforced that.  I am happy that my Staffordshire dogs and abstract paintings can live together in one room!  Now I am off to look through my stash for the fabric piece I never wanted to use because it was too granny!

Embarrassing!

Have you ever been embarrassed to buy something?

I have to admit, this little guy caused me to turn a little red when I bought him from my favorite resale shop last year.  This is a dung beetle, I've been told, encased in clear plastic.  He was only fifty cents.

I was ecstatic when I spotted him, and couldn't believe my good fortune at finding such a neat thing to put on my table.  The ladies who checked me out were less than excited though!  They kept saying "ooh, yuck, look at this!  I am glad it can't get out!  What are you going to do with it?!"  I just laughed and got myself out of there with my encased beetle.

When I got home, my embarrassment quickly faded.  I think he is the perfect accent sitting on top of a stack of books.  My nephews thought it was especially cool too!  I am on the hunt for more of them.  I would love to have a bug collection, encased in plastic of course!

I was quick to notice that my obsession with preserved insects is not strange.  In the family room of one of my favorite houses in Lonny Magazine, sits a fellow encased insect.  You can kind of see it in the upper left hand picture on top of the small red book.  It is nice to know that I am not abnormal, in this regard anyway!

Thrift Store Finds

One of my favorite things to do is go to antique malls, estate sales, and especially thrift stores.  Looking around my house, I noticed that  the majority of my knick knacks have come from estate sales and thrift stores!  What I like about shopping at these places is finding unique, one of a kind accessories for cheap!  I have even seen things at the thrift store that I saw a couple weeks later at the antique mall with the price marked way up!  I don't get to go as much as I used to.  Unfortunately my kids don't appreciate these places like I do! But whenever I can get a sitter, I usually try to make it to some of my favorite shopping spots!  Here are a few things that I have bought recently.

I bought this pretty plate at the Salvation Army a couple of weeks ago.  I have it in the living room on the coffee table on top of a book.   The shape is very unique and I like the Asian feel it has to it.  I also like the black background that is not very common.  This is not something that I will find at my local Target, and I am probably not going to see it in anybody else's home!  I only paid $2.99 for it!  I am always on the lookout for plates to place on the coffee table or side tables.

I bought this on that same trip to the Salvation Army.  I have it sitting on the back of the toilet.  It is a great place to put hair rubber bands.  I really like the colors, and again I am not going to find this anywhere else!  The best part is I only paid $1.99 for it!

The greatest thing I bought on that trip to the Salvation Army was this Foo Dog!  It was only $4.59!!  I have a love for Chinoiserie so finding this made my week!! I know I was skipping out of the store with this.  I have to admit that hubby gets all the credit for finding this one!  After searching the shelves and picking up a few things I walked away without ever seeing this beautiful green foo dog.  A few minutes later hubby brought it over to me.  I couldn't believe I missed it!!  I excitedly looked for the price sticker and couldn't find one!  At the Salvation Army if there is not a price on something, they can't sell it to you!  Well, I wasn't going to walk away without this guy.  I made hubby go ask the manager and he said that he ususally doesn't do this, but he would sell it to us for $5.99.  There was a sale that day so we got it for $4.59.  These are usually pretty expensive and sell in shops that I don't usually go in.

Here he is sitting in the living room on the side table with other previous thrift store finds.

Here is a pencil/chalk drawing that hubby surprised me with!  He bought it at the Salvation Army for $6.99.  I like his strange, in a good way, taste in art.  It brings an interesting mix to our home.  He has always been really into art and has created lots of neat drawings, sketches, and paintings.  So when it comes to art, I definitely like what he picks out!

Here it is hanging in our living room above another painting that hubby surprised me with, also from the Salvation Army.  I added the picture light to it.  Don't forget to look at the artwork at the thrift stores!  You can find interesting pieces for cheap prices!

Here is a little jewelry box I found at an estate sale.  It was only $2.  I love the colors!  My daughter M wanted me to point out the beautiful picture that she painted in the background!  It is an abstract painting done with water colors and markers.  Ha!  I thought it was so beautiful that I framed it and hung it up. Beautiful, meaningful and free!  That's my favorite kind of artwork!

So do you have a favorite thrift store?  If you don't, find one and try to go every week.  Things are always changing!  You will have so much fun!

Designers Who Inspire. #2 Mary McDonald

One of my favorite designers is former milliner Mary McDonald.  What I love about all of her rooms is the wow factor.  Her designs are never boring!  She pays great attention to the smallest details.  She has inspired me to add more drama to my decorating and not be afraid to take chances.

Who would have thought that putting striped curtains and striped walls together would look good?  Somehow Mary McDonald pulled it off!  Notice the details on the couch, the Greek key trim and the tassle.  She says in her book that she often uses dressmaker details in her decorating because she used to be a milliner.

Wow! Love that bed! It brings a lot of  drama to the room!  This is a bedroom she designed for a House Beautiful show house in Bel Air.  She designed the canopy bed.

Here is a picture of  Mary's leopard print library.  In her book she writes that she planned to add more pictures to the wall, but she never did.  Even famous designers have rooms that are not "finished."

Dramatic use of color!

Another gorgeous bedroom with another dramatic bed!  I think Mary McDonald is a master at creating beautiful bedrooms!

A neutral dining room brought to life by the red curtains.  I love the use of blue and red and all of the Asian accents in the living room.  Her rooms often have an exotic, worldly look to them.

Pretty living room.  Love the bold artwork and mirrors!

More blue and red!

Cute girl's bedroom featured in House Beautiful.  What little girl wouldn't want to sleep in that bed?

Dramatic black and white with accents of red.  Definitely not boring!

Two colorful living rooms!

If you get a chance, go to the book store, find a comfy chair and take a look at her new book.  Hubby gave it to me for Christmas and I have read every page and studied every picture.  There is lots of inspiration to be had.   You will not be disappointed!

Laundry Day

Seems like I am always doing laundry!  In fact I am looking at a huge pile of laundry that needs to be folded right now.  I tend to overlook my laundry room.  I don't give it a lot of thought like the rest of the house.  After looking at the laundry rooms below, I am inspired to make some small changes in my laundry room. I want it to be decorated like the rest of the house.  Maybe then I will enjoy doing laundry more.  Or maybe not.

All images are from decor pad.

I love the industrial feel of this laundry room!  The subway tiles and stainless steel shelves look great!  Even the storage looks good.

If I had a laundry room that looked like this, the laundry would already be folded!  Love everything about it!  I would spend time in here folding laundry and even ironing!  It would be my "me" time.

Nice cabinets!

Well, my laundry room does not have a door to outside or even windows.  It does not have room for an island to fold laundry.  But there are still things I can do to make it a little more appealing, without spending a lot of money.

I will let you know when I make some progress in this area!  I guess I will go tackle that pile of laundry now!
